Happy #Fitness Friday,
Drumroll, please! After 13 weeks of blood, literal sweat and tears, the Koons “Biggest Loser” challenge has come to a close. Every Koons employee who participated in the challenge did an outstanding job! Before we get to the winners, here are some brief – but outstanding – statistics from the challenge:
- Overall contest spanned 13 weeks
- 474 Koons employees participated
- Average weight loss of all participants: 6.25% of body weight
- Combined weight loss of the organization: 5,603.10 POUNDS!!
- Our ‘biggest loser’ lost 79.1 pounds and our largest percent of weight loss was 25.87%
- Our winning dealership team had 29 contestants with an average of 14.04% weight loss and a total of 957.30 pounds!
We couldn’t be more proud of all the participants in the challenge – they did a great job and the hard work paid off. Now, for the winners…

- Congratulations to Mike Victor from Baltimore Ford for being the #1 weight loss winner at 25.87% Weight Loss!

We definitely can say this challenge was a HUGE success! It not only rallied the entire Koons team around a healthy cause, but it also made our organization healthier in the process. As we all know, healthy lifestyle choices are a lifelong initiative that require daily maintenance! But, in the end, will allow us to live longer – and healthier – lives.
Here’s to a happy and healthy rest of 2012!
- Start your day with breakfast.
Breakfast fills your “empty tank” to get you going after a long night without food. And it can help you do better in school. Easy-to-prepare breakfasts include cold cereal with fruit and low-fat milk, whole-wheat toast with peanut butter, yogurt with fruit, whole-grain waffles or even last night’s pizza!
- Get Moving!
It’s easy to fit physical activities into your daily routine. Walk, bike or jog to see friends. Take a 10-minute activity break every hour while you read, do homework or watch TV. Climb stairs instead of taking an escalator or elevator. Try to do these things for a total of 30 minutes every day.
- Snack smart.
Snacks are a great way to refuel. Choose snacks from different food groups – a glass of low-fat milk and a few graham crackers, an apple or celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins, or some dry cereal. If you eat smart at other meals, cookies, chips and candy are OK for occasional snacking.
- Balance your food choices – don’t eat too much of any one thing.
You don’t have to give up foods like hamburgers, french fries and ice cream to eat healthy. You just have to be smart about how often and how much of them you eat. Your body needs nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, fat and many different vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and A, iron and calcium from a variety of foods. Balancing food choices from the Food Guide Pyramid and checking out the Nutrition Facts Panel on food labels will help you get all these nutrients.
- Eat more grains, fruits and vegetables.
These foods give you carbohydrates for energy, plus vitamins, minerals and fiber. Besides, they taste good! Try breads such as whole-wheat, bagels and pita. Spaghetti and oatmeal are also in the grain group.
Bananas, strawberries and melons are some great tasting fruits. Try vegetables raw, on a sandwich or salad.
- Foods aren’t good or bad.
A healthy eating style is like a puzzle with many parts. Each part — or food — is different. Some foods may have more fat, sugar or salt while others may have more vitamins or fiber. There is a place for all these foods. What makes a diet good or bad is how foods fit together. Balancing your choices is important. Fit in a higher-fat food, like pepperoni pizza, at dinner by choosing lower-fat foods at other meals. And don’t forget about moderation. If two pieces of pizza fill you up, you don’t need a third.

The job of an air filter is pretty simple; to keep the air entering the engine as clean as possible. Though the process is simple, allowing your air filter to get clogged with dirt can have a serious impact on your engine’s performance, and even it’s life span.
As you drive about your engine breathes in the air that passes by. Sometimes this air can include dirt, debris, bugs, etc. Your trusty air filter catches these things while letting in fresh, clean air into the engine. All is well, your engine is happy and the air filter is doing its job. After miles and miles, the filter begins to wear down and all the dirt and debris starts to clog the filter. A dirty air filter means that your engine has to work harder to do its job, this puts an increased load on the engine and on the gas pedal since it’s harder to accelerate as before with a clean filter. It’s typical to see diminished performance and fuel economy with a dirty filter.

In the worst case, the air filter can get so dirty that it stops doing its job and allows dirt to flow into the engine. This dirt then makes its way into the oil, and given enough time, could start to do some damage.
Replacing your air filter can restore your engine’s performance and fuel economy. Drop by any of our service departments to have your vehicle’s filter inspected or replaced.
If you’re serious about weight loss, then you simply must change your current eating habits. Until you do so, you’ll find it that much harder to lose weight.
When it comes to weight loss, calories are the enemy. After a meal, your body converts the calories that it needs into fuel and then stores the rest. The body requires at least 1,200-1,500 calories to carry out its everyday activities.
Your mission (now that you’ve chosen to accept it) is simple. In order to lose weight, you’ll need to ensure that you’re eating just enough food to fuel your body. This way, your body will be forced to turn to its fat reserves to make up the deficit.
Reducing your daily caloric intake doesn’t mean that you need to starve. In fact, it’s possible to eat five meals during the day without ever going hungry. To achieve this, you’ll need to change your diet to healthier foods.
Eat More Fruits & Veggies
Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grain meals. Complex carbs take a lot longer to digest and don’t have as many calories as processed foods.
Avoid Refined Foods
Avoid refined foods. They’re stripped of most of their nutrients and contain nothing but carbs. Instead of eating a biscuit or chocolate as a snack, try eating fruit. You’ll lose weight faster. You can also start a food journal to track what you eat daily. If you reduce your daily caloric intake by 500 calories, you could lose as much as 8 pounds in a month!
